| As a natural feeding system, it wouldn't be right to offer just Phytoplankton without completing the cycle and offering Zooplankton. PLANKTONICS LIVE COPEPOD AND ROTIFER MIX gives the aquarist the opportunity to complete the key second stage in coral reef biology by boosting this essential naturally occurring primary food source which forms a large proportion of the daily energy uptake of corals and other filter feeding fauna. | ||
| Zooplankton in nature | ||
|
Whilst Phytoplankton may be one of
the most important organisms found in our oceans, It is their main
predator (Zooplankton) that bridge the gap between these microscopic algae
and the corals and fish we maintain in captivity. Even natures largest
oceanic predator the Killer whale has its survival directly linked via a
complex food chain to the availability of Zooplankton. Zooplankton (animal planktonic organism) is a common collective name used to describe all non algal based life below a few millimetres in size that is found floating in our oceans. As the name suggests, unlike Phytoplankton which is algal based, Zooplankton is animal in origin. The term Zooplankton covers potentially millions of species from thousands of genera, from fish larvae, to the larvae of your common urchin, down to the most basic and microscopic crustacean and coral larvae. It is Zooplankton that form the main link between the conversion of free nutrients in the water column by Phytoplankton into biologically available biomass (locked and stored energy), and transference of that energy and essential nutrients through the food chain to larger organisms that capture and consume the Zooplankton such as your corals. Corals only receive part of their energy requirements from light in the case of Photosynthetic species, whilst non-photosynthetic families such as Dendronephthya sp or Tubastrea Sp are almost totally dependent on Zooplankton capture You can see Zooplankton capture in progress in this superb video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KuFLUzrcfQ Credits By far the largest contributors to
the variety of organisms making up zooplankton are the crustaceans, with
Copepods 'just one family among thousands' making up more than 12,000
species in their own right. Obviously it would be impossible to
recreate all of this incredible diversity within our own aquaria, but we can help
to some degree by offering part of this essential food group to our corals
and other livestock. We can do this by regularly dosing the aquarium with
infusions of live Zooplankton. |

|
Dosing with PLANKTONICS LIVE COPEPOD
AND ROTIFER MIX on a regular basis will not only help feed your corals
directly, but will also infuse the system with a fresh influx of these
very beneficial organisms.
Adult copepods will flourish in quiet corners of the aquarium system such as refugiums or filters and inside Live rock, reproducing and adding their own larvae to the live Zooplankton population density. As well as adding to the live food availability within the system, Adult Copepods will also feed on micro algae films, detritus, and other organic matter expelled by larger livestock thereby helping the systems nutrient cycling capacity and lowering the load on the filtration system which can lead to better water conditions, lower free nutrient concentrations, and fewer incidence of problematic algae outbreaks. Keep stored at room temperature. Dosage: Add 1 bottle per 150 gallons system volume monthly. For best results add to the main display after lights out to allow the culture to disperse without excessive instant predation from fish.
