PLANKTONICS LIVE PHYTOPLANKTON
PLANKTONICS live foods are cultured fresh in the UK exclusively for Reef-Eden to ensure our customers only receive the finest quality live foods available.

After rigorous cleansing to reduce the free nutrient content, Each and every batch is filtered and decanted fresh on the day of ordering from our culturing facility, and then dispatched direct to our dealer network. This means that compared to many imported brands, PLANKTONICS LIVE PHYTOPLANKTON offers a much higher live cell count for volume with less degradation and less contamination than almost any other brand available.

PLANKTONICS Phytoplankton is also free of any artificial colorants, preservatives or thickening agents and is available in 3 types. Nannochloropsis, Tetraselmis, and Super-mix (A blend of 5 different species).

Store in a refrigerated/chilled state and shake weekly to agitate. (DO NOT FREEZE)

For best results use in combination with PLANKTONICS LIVE COPEPOD AND ROTIFER MIX

PHYTOPLANKTON IN NATURE.

Literally all life in the oceans relies on the existence of Phytoplankton (algal planktonic organisms) and its ability to take up free nutrients and other compounds from the water column which are then converted into body mass to be carried across into the food chain and to be synthesised by the organisms that consume them. Whilst there are a wide number of vertebrate and invertebrate  species that directly consume Phytoplankton such as some small fish, certain coral species, and many bivalves tunicates and sponges etc, a large proportion of phytoplankton is consumed by Zooplankton (animal planktonic organisms) which form the foundation food source for the vast majority of filter feeding organisms found on reefs, including most of the coral species we keep in captivity.

Coral reef aquariums are in most cases sadly lacking in available Planktonic life compared to nature, be that Phytoplankton or Zooplankton, so the addition of regular doses of phytoplankton combined with regular infusions of Zooplankton can help in several ways.

1: By providing a natural high energy food source rich in essential elements to a wide variety of invertebrates to promote good growth, vitality, reproduction and colour.

2: Dosing Phytoplankton to new systems has been found to help reduce initial nutrient spikes and help establish stable nutrient pathways more quickly resulting in reduced algal phases and increased biodiversity.

3: Dosing Phytoplankton will also help boost Zooplankton and other base level microfauna populations which will help reduce the amount of free waste accumulation within systems that is generated by higher organisms and manual feeding of prepared foods.

4: Dosing Phytoplankton in live rock curing systems has been found to speed up both the curing process, and help minimise toxic shock. This leads to a greater diversity of live rock organisms making it through the curing process and ultimately better quality live rock to the hobbyist..
